In the fall of 2023, the state of Wisconsin released a scope and sequence for Civics instruction at each grade level (elementary, middle, and high school). In addition to the scope and sequence, Wisconsin recently received an iCivics grant that is providing additional funding specifically for elementary schools. This training will review a three-part module training created by CESA’s (as a part of this grant) for K-5 teachers and administrators across the state. The titles/content of the three modules created include:
Module 1: Overview of 2018 Social Studies Standards, K-5 Civics Scope & Sequence, and Civics Practices
Module 2: Teaching Civics and Inquiry in the Elementary Grades, Trusted Resources, and Classroom Implementation
Module 3: Reading, Writing & Thinking in the K-5 Civics Classroom
All three modules will be reviewed in an interactive way that allows elementary teachers to better engage students in social studies instruction. In addition to the module content, K-5 educators will get an opportunity to engage in learning, networking, and collaboration around high-quality teaching practices and discuss how to embed social studies content and skills throughout their day.
Audience: Grades K-5 Social Studies Teachers
Cost: $25
Presenters: Kevin Podeweltz and Karie Jo Bornberg

]]>This will be a three part series that will support EL teachers and leaders in best practices for writing Individual Learner Plans (ILPs) for students who are English Learners. Participants will receive a checklist of components that should be included in the ILP, receive training on how to determine the language and content goals for students, and guidance on selecting strategies that will support the student in achieving the goal. Participants will determine how to progress monitor for the goal. Participants will also receive an ILP template that they can use to write their ILPs. Participants will receive guided support in writing an ILP and should plan to bring information for a particular student to the training.
As a part of this series we will have a Fall date that will focus on getting started with ILPs, in Winter you will have a 1:1 consultation with Larissa to make any improvements or ask any questions you have in regards to ILPs, and finally in the Spring we will meet as a group again to go over progress monitoring and other pieces in regards to preparing for the new year with ILPs.
